Sydney Royal Easter Show. 1 - 14 April, 2010
The Great Aussie Backyard
It’s everything you’ve ever wanted to know about gardening. There’s inspiration, garden tips and products and heaps of green-fingered advice. You’ll find out all about rainwater tanks, solar ovens, the tea herb garden, chooks and guinea pigs, barbecue tips and the food forest.
Centrepiece of The Great Aussie Backyard is the Life is a Garden display, a showcase of horticultural know-how distilled from the experts. There are ideas here for gardens of all shapes and sizes, from nature strips to courtyards and balcony gardens, and you’d be amazed what you can do even in a limited space. Professional horticulturalists can show you how to create a living plant wall, how to make a water feature, a worm farm, the nitty-gritty of composting and making a vegie garden in a tight spot.
Native birds and animals bring a special presence to a garden. There’s nothing like a pair of lorikeets feeding on grevillea flowers, and the Bushcare people can show you how to conserve and restore habitat for native flora and fauna.
Be sure the take the kids to Little Diggers for a play in the sandpit and the cubbyhouse, and they’ll get to plant a sunflower seed and take it home.
And don’t miss Luke’s Reptile Kingdom, although you might not want to take home any of the critters on display.
Feeling hungry? You’re right next to the Show’s Graze Alfresco Dining, packed with wonderful flavours from around the world.
